SMOKEFREE PHILLY: CIAA

Smoke-Free Restaurants and Bars Now the Law in PA The Pennsylvania General Assembly passed and Governor Edward G. Rendell signed into law, Act 27 of 2008, the Pennsylvania Clean Indoor Air Act (CIAA), which prohibits smoking in most indoor public places, including restaurants and most bars.

The law includes most indoor public places and workplaces, but exempts several other types of establishments such as private clubs and casinos.

Starting September 11, 2008, all workplaces, including restaurants and most bars, in Pennsylvania will be smoke-free. The new law will protect workers across the Commonwealth from the dangerous effects of secondhand smoke, such as lung and heart disease.

According to the Breathe-Free Coalition, six people die every day from the deadly effects of secondhand smoke in Penn- sylvania.

Congratulations to Governor Edward G. Rendell and the Pennsylvania General Assembly for taking this important first step to protect workers and the public from the harms of secondhand smoke.
