  • Menthol numbs your throat and reduces your urge to cough. When added to tobacco, menthol makes it easier to smoke and harder to quit. Menthol also cools the tobacco smoke making it less irritating or harsh to young tobacco users. Teens who start smoking with menthol products are twice as likely to become daily lifetime smokers1.
  • Fact: Menthol makes nicotine more addictive and more deadly. When menthol is added to tobacco, you get more nicotine, you become more addicted, the tobacco companies make more money.
  • African American communities are subjected to more predatory menthol marketing than other communities.This marketing exploits important cultural traditions to target African American smokers.  
  • This has resulted in significantly higher rates of menthol cigarette smoking among African American smokers than other racial or ethnic groups. Over 80% of African American smokers in Philadelphia smoke menthol cigarettes2.
